Throughout the month of April, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel is inviting the community to celebrate the Carnation Revolution of 1974 with a new stage of the 51st Anniversary Commemoration Program of April 25, 1974, full of culture, memory, art and civic participation.
Five decades after the dawn that gave freedom to the Portuguese people, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel, under the coordination of the Commemorations Committee, with the involvement of the municipality's active forces, prepared an emotional and intergenerational commemoration of April 25, 1974, with activities for all ages and spaces that celebrate the achieved democracy.
Exhibitions, shows, talks and tributes mark this commemorative cycle.
Featured:
• Exhibition “April with Various Voices” (from April 7th to May 2nd), at the Municipal Library, which brings together testimonies from those who lived through the dictatorship and perspectives of today’s youth.
• “When a word is worth a thousand images”, documentary exhibition on display at the Cineteatro Jaime Pinto, curated by ALFA and the Associação Académica de Coimbra.
• “Art meets Freedom”, a painting exhibition that brings together students from the EB 2,3 School and the Parish Council of São Brás de Alportel, which will be inaugurated at 10:30 am on the 26th, and will be on display until July.
The month is also marked by the "Conversations with a Taste of April" that the Dr. Estanco Louro Municipal Library holds on the 22nd, to promote dialogue between generations, as well as by another journey through the history of democracy, with a special edition of the "VATE" project, Let's Catch the Theater, a partnership with ACTA - The Algarve Theater Company that invites you to climb aboard a theater bus to watch the play "Pingo a Pingo" aimed at primary school classes.
Theater is a significant presence in this edition and so the month ends, on the 30th, with the presentation of the play “A Caixa”* that Companhia do Sueste presents at São Brás Cineteatro Jaime Pinto on April 30th, at 9:30 pm, in an initiative organized by the Barro i Cal association and which has the support of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel.
The eve of Freedom Day, April 24th, is celebrated at the São Brás Cineteatro Jaime Pinto with the Municipal Dance School's show “Passos de Liberdade”*, which takes the stage at 7:00 pm and with the most anticipated moment: the Domingos e Amigos concert that starts at 9:30 pm, with free entry (and tickets that can be collected at the Municipal Gallery).
On April 25th, the celebrations begin at 10:00 a.m. with the formal flag-raising ceremony, in collaboration with the São Brás de Alportel Philharmonic Band and the São Brás de Alportel Volunteer Fire Department. This will be followed by an artistic performance, in collaboration with the local "Carolas" group, and a tribute to the builders of democracy, with the official presentation of the street named after António Chaves Pinto, the first president of the first Administrative Commission after April 25th, 1974.
The Commemorative Solemn Session will follow in the Main Hall of the City Council.
During the afternoon, at the Municipal Petanca Complex, a new edition of the National Localities Cup in Petanca will take place, an initiative of the Municipality, with the support of the Portuguese Petanca Federation.
In the evening, the musical show “Mais Abril”, by the Cante Andarilho Group, closes the day with music at the São Brás Cineteatro Jaime Pinto.
The program culminates on April 30th with the play “A Caixa”*, by Companhia do Sueste.
The celebrations are organized by the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel, in partnership with schools, local associations and the community, under the coordination of the Commission for the Commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of April 25, 1974.
* Tickets are on sale from April 15th at the Municipal Gallery and on the day of the show at the Cineteatro box office, one hour before the shows.
