Municipality advances candidacy of the Castro Marim Marshland and VRSA Nature Reserve as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
As previously announced, the Municipality of Castro Marim intends for the Castro Marim Marshland and VRSA Nature Reserve to be classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is now advancing its application for funding for an integrated project to enhance and promote the natural and cultural heritage of that location, currently awaiting a decision from the Management Authority.
It is expected that a Nature Reserve Action Plan will be developed, with the aim of recognizing the work of biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and scientific research that has been carried out over the years, in addition to planning future innovative and promotional actions.
To ensure the visibility and effective implementation of this plan, it is necessary to secure technical consultancy to guide the application process in line with UNESCO criteria, develop environmental monitoring programs, develop communication and marketing strategies, and acquire equipment.
This application also includes the rehabilitation of a warehouse in the salt pans, the renovation of the infrastructure of the Castro Marim Wharf and the modernization and updating of the Interpretation Center of the Santo António Revelim Territory, with a total investment of €683,599.01, an eligible investment of €594,175.47 and a maximum ERDF co-financing rate of 60% of the total eligible expenses.
