Quarteira will hear tsunami warning sirens during acoustic tests

Following the completion of the installation of sound towers to warn the population about the risk of tsunamis and other collective risks (such as heat waves or rough seas) in the parish of Quarteira, the Municipality of Loulé will carry out acoustic tests next Tuesday, September 30, between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.

The municipality of Loulé, with approximately 14 km of coastline and significant seismic vulnerability, continues to build its capacity to respond to serious accidents and disasters.

This well-known vulnerability led to the implementation of preventive measures, including the definition and installation of signage along evacuation routes to meeting points (safe points). In furtherance of this objective and in compliance with Resolution No. 2/2019 of September 12, the Municipality implemented a tsunami and other collective hazard warning and alert system in the parish of Quarteira. Seven sirens were installed at strategic points along the coastline, including the Vilamoura Marina, the Vilamoura GNR Station, the Quarteira Municipal Swimming Pools, Vilamoura Beach (near the beach support), Largo das Cortes Reais, near the Hotel D. José, and in Quarteira Nascente (near the Gaivota beach support).

These actions are part of the program Tsunami Ready (Tsunami Ready Recognition Program), an international initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO-IOC whose objective is to mitigate tsunami risk by adopting self-protection measures, thus increasing the resilience of coastal communities to tsunamis.

The Municipality requests everyone's understanding regarding any inconvenience caused by these acoustic tests. For more information, contact the Loulé Municipal Civil Protection Service.
