The winning work of the 1st edition of the Maria José Estanco Prize 2025, established under a collaboration protocol signed between Loulé City Council and the National Board of Directors of the Order of Architects, is now known.
The Piódão Square and Tourist Office, in Piódão – Arganil, a project completed in 2022, designed by Paula del Rio Huesa, from the Branco del Rio Arquitectos architecture firm, is the first project to be distinguished under this award.
The jury justifies the fact that this work “fully meets, with simplicity and delicacy, all the assessment factors defined in the Regulation”, highlighting “the great sensitivity of the project, the rigor of the design and the respect for the context of heritage value in which it is inserted, without prejudice to an innovative and contemporary approach”.
Its integration into the built environment and the apparent simplicity of the project reveal a demanding and highly consistent effort. An intervention in the public space that resolves the "formal complexity" of the existing space with a "new, gentle centrality" through pavement design and the integration or planting of trees, and creates a leisure area that is expected to be highly enjoyed, notes the jury, composed of Teresa Nunes da Ponte (president), Sofia Pontes, and Ana Bordalo (members).
Remember that the award aims to distinguish works Quality work authored or co-authored by female architects who contributed to the sociocultural sustainability of Portuguese architecture, promoting the profession's responsibility and social commitment, and encouraging the full and effective participation of women in the profession. It is also a tribute to Maria José Estanco, a Loulé native, who was the first Portuguese female architect.
The award ceremony takes place today, Wednesday, March 26, the date of birth of its patron.
