Loulé marks the International Day for Disaster Reduction in Loulé secondary school

Loulé City Council, through the Municipal Civil Protection Service, and in partnership with Loulé Secondary School, marked the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on October 13th with initiatives carried out at this educational establishment.

An exhibition of Civil Protection resources and agents was on display at the school grounds. The documentary "The Big Wave" was also shown, delving into the history, science, and emotions surrounding one of the planet's most powerful natural phenomena—the earthquake followed by a tsunami—and highlighting the vulnerability of the Algravia coast and the municipality of Loulé.

The initiative brought together several entities linked to the protection and rescue system, including the Portuguese Red Cross, the Medical Emergency Institute, the National Republican Guard in its various areas, namely the Coastal Control Unit, the Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit and the Safe School program, the Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the Loulé Municipal Fire Department, the Serra do Caldeirão Forestry Producers Association and the Municipal Civil Protection Service.

The students of the School's Civil Protection Technical Course, from the 10th, 11th and 12th years, played an active role in the organization and promotion of the activity, as they were responsible for presenting the civil protection agents to the other classes, as well as practical demonstrations on the functionalities of the Mobile Unit and the equipment used by the Forest Firefighters and the Municipal Forestry Intervention Team.

Established by the United Nations in 1989, the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction aims to alert governments, organizations and citizens to the importance of preventing and mitigating risks, promoting more resilient communities prepared to respond to emergency situations.

With this initiative, Loulé City Council aims to raise awareness and engage the school community in promoting a culture of safety and prevention, fostering moments of learning and sharing for the common good.
