Farense: send your contribution to regulate the Municipal Maritime Space

Faro City Council is asking residents to submit contributions by March 6th for the preparation of the future proposal for Municipal Regulations for Waterways and Maritime Use, which will now fall under its jurisdiction.

"We urge all interested parties to submit their ideas so that a more solid proposal can be developed that better represents the wishes of the municipality's citizens," the municipality said in a statement.

The note states that, as a result of the transfer of powers from the State, the municipality has "new responsibilities" in the area of land management related to beaches and waterways. "The regulation, for which Faro residents are seeking input, seeks to ensure that the proposed measures bring residents closer to the natural values of the Ria Formosa and the municipality's beaches, organizing the various structures and facilities located there," the note reads.

The municipality also states that it intends to "ensure environmental preservation and sustainability." The responsibilities transferred to the municipality include the administration and supervision of the assets and areas of the public maritime domain under its jurisdiction, the granting of private use titles, and all acts of execution, modification, and termination of authorizations, licenses, or concessions related to commercial activities and the provision of public services.

The municipality will now set the fees to be charged for the use of its port infrastructures, for the services provided therein and for the occupation of spaces intended for commercial or industrial activities.

Other areas now under the municipality's administration include the planning, contracting, and management of public regular passenger transportation services on waterways, as well as the licensing and supervision of tourist passenger transportation. The definition of buoys and maritime markings, the locations of slipways, docking infrastructure, anchorages, and the nautical recreational dock are also covered by this instrument, it concludes.
