Photographic Exhibition “April 25, 1974, Thursday”, by Alfredo Cunha, at the Atalaia Barracks

The photographic exhibition “April 25, 1974, Thursday”, by Alfredo Cunha, opens on April 25th at 5:00 pm at the Atalaia Barracks. This exhibition is jointly organized by the Municipality of Tavira and the Infantry Regiment No. 1 and will be on display until December 30th, 2024.

This exhibition is part of a series dedicated to the work of renowned photojournalist Alfredo Cunha, part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution. Curated by Diana Sousa and Téo Pitella, the exhibition offers a detailed and unique overview of the various moments of the Revolution, drawing from a vast archive of images documenting more than five decades of the photographer's career. From the Colonial Wars to the present day, the 50 selected photographs reveal the transformations and historical milestones that shaped Portugal.

Structured around the book of the same name, published by Editora Tinta-da-China, it includes engravings by Vhils and music by Rodrigo Leão.

Visitors will be guided through three thematic centers:
– “From War to Freedom”, which establishes relationships between colonial wars and the ideological structures of the Revolution;

– “April 25, 1974, Thursday”, with iconic photographs that illustrate the memories and imagination of this remarkable day in the history of Portugal;

– "After April," which portrays the country in the process of reconstruction. Each image in these sections establishes a connection with crucial historical events and, when viewed in conjunction with the current political context, provides an immersion into Portugal's collective memories and the consolidation of the Democratic State.

Alfredo Cunha, born in 1953 in Celorico da Beira, began his professional career in advertising and commercial photography in 1970. Since then, he has collaborated with several newspapers and magazines, including Portuguese News Agency – ANOP, News from PortugalPortuguese, and the newspaper Public, where he was photo editor between 1989 and 1997. He was photographer for Presidents Ramalho Eanes and Mário Soares. His career includes several photographic series dedicated to major historical events, such as the April 25, 1974, Portuguese decolonization, the PREC (Ongoing Revolutionary Process, 1974-1975), the fall of Niculae Ceausescu in Romania (1989), and the Iraq War (2003). He has published several photography books over the past few decades, since Roots of Our Strength (1972) until Porto: The City of Bridges (2022).

The exhibition “April 25, 1974, Thursday” offers a valuable opportunity to witness and reflect on the moments of change that shaped the country.

Time: Tuesday to Saturday (except holidays), from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
