Since 2018, thousands of children from São Brás have benefited from the innovative “Bibliotherapy” project that the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel implemented through the Dr. Estanco Louro Municipal Library and is now developing from the School Libraries of the José Belchior Viegas School Group.
Far beyond books and reading, this project is based on learning about affection, as a universal language of emotions, which is so urgent to teach, share, and live, to promote healthy growth in children.
The initiative was born from the realization of the growing need to work on affection and the importance of positive or nurturing touch with children.
The program began in preschool education in the 2018/2019 school year and has had very positive results from the outset.
Currently, the program is aimed at all children aged 4 to 10, attending all schools in the municipality, and is led by Maria José Carocinho, who explains that it is an evolving process, not a static one: "Bibliotherapy is what children need." And it truly makes all the difference in their learning.
Readings, stories, moments of relaxation, music and games are intertwined in Bibliotherapy, always prioritizing emotions, captivating children's interest in reading and fostering self-respect and respect for others.
"A child who goes to school happily and is surrounded by a welcoming environment is more willing to learn and interact," argues Maria José Carocinho, who visits all preschool and primary school classes every month.
The teachers and educators of these children have also given their opinion, revealing that the classes are calmer and that there is more care for each other after participating in the Bibliotherapy sessions.
Education Councilor Marlene Guerreiro reveals that the results are even more impressive when the team is composed of the library, teachers/educators, and families. "And this is the key to the intervention in São Brás de Alportel, where the work is truly collaborative, with very active community participation. This project is a good example of this, and it's definitely a commitment to continue!"
Since its inception, this pioneering project in the region has been a benchmark, which is why it has been invited to host sessions at schools in neighboring municipalities.
