Starting September 25th, beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI) will no longer pay the full amount but will receive an immediate discount of 50% on the non-contested portion of their medication. This support was previously provided, but it required a refund request; with this measure, it is no longer necessary to make a request.
The Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI) is a monthly cash benefit paid to low-income seniors aged 66 years and 4 months or older, who have resided in Portugal for more than six years, and are equal to or older than the standard retirement pension age under the general Social Security system. The CSI is a maximum of €488.22 per month; however, approximately 131,000 beneficiaries of this supplement received an average of less than €144.
In addition to this support, those who benefit from this solidarity supplement continue to be entitled to:
- reimbursement of expenses for glasses or lenses (75% of the expense, up to a limit of 100 Euros, every two years)
- reimbursement for purchases of removable dental prostheses (75% of the expense, up to a limit of 250 Euros, every 3 years)
- Free dental/stomatologist consultations at the health center, through a dental check. The dental check for seniors is a document that grants free access to oral health care to National Health Service users who are beneficiaries of the Solidarity Supplement for Seniors. This check is part of the Ministry of Health's National Oral Health Promotion Program, ensuring diagnostics and preventive and curative oral treatments for lower-income seniors.
